Amazon Fires CT Affiliates CT Legislature Kills the Golden Goose
Amazon DOT COM, the online marketing giant has terminated affiliate “contract”s with CT residents due to a change in CT tax law. The Golden Goose is Dead.
Under the new law Amazon would be required to provide tax/sales data to the State for collection purposes. Most affiliates voluntarily reported sales and paid the sales tax. CT legislature contends that it has not received sufficient tax revenues from affiliate programs.Exacerbating the problem at a national level, the big box retailers proclaim an unfair overhead advantage for the online marketers and are pushing for internet taxation at the national level.
The CT legislature is desperate to raise more revenues, so as to soften the need for union give-backs towards filling the State budget deficit, and in its rush to scoop up every cent it thinks it can. The golden goose in this case is dead. I have dropped my bookstore, won’t advertise for Amazon without compensation, and consequently, won’t collect or owe sales tax to the State.
