Proportion

Tai Chi Search Center Way Proportion implies not only  a right to left balance, but also a vertical to horizontal, and forward to backward balance.”-Uhlmann,  Left hand relates to right foot, left elbow to right knee, left shoulder to right hip means distance from the center.  Also, if elbow bent, knee is bent.  If hip is forward, shoulder is forward proportionately.  Moving in this manner, the body takes on a roundness (Master Wang describes it as “globe shaped”).  This also is explained by others when they talk of t’ai chi movements being circualar.  As Dr. Uhlmann describes it, some one should be able to draw a circle which has a hand and the opposite foot at the circumference, or the elbow and the knee, or the hip and the shoulder.  Each circle has the center as the center point.

Recommended Practice:  The test for proportion is to stand in a particular posture,  and have someone apply force to the posture.  Correct stance will reult in the sensation of pushing through the arm, and feeling the force in the opposite foot.
