Tai Chi Search Center Principles: Balance
Tai Chi Search Center Way Balance is achieved by turning to angles of 45 degrees, or increments thereof. The weight is then shifted to 50/50 or100/00 as each of the postures requires (never further forward than 50/50). Moving in this mannertakes one from one natural balance point to the next. Each posture has an optimal, natural balance point. This must be FELT. The Bagua diagram shows that the four directions and the four corners are related in angles of 45 degrees Dr. Uhlmann puts it this way: ‚“These angles provide a stable platform for changing to the next positionГ‚”.
Balance also requires keeping the body level. Master Wang says that up and down movement increases hip tension and decreases the ability to root.
In form practice, turn the center, step, shift the weight.

Feet should width apart, facing North. Turn Center left 45*, Left toes follow(pivot)shift weight 100% left, step right foot forward. Turn Center right 45*,hands follow center to Ward Off Right. Shift weight to 50/50. Turn Center right 45*, hands follow to Big Roll Back (right), shift weight to rear foot 100/0. Turn Center left 135*,hands follow in Small Roll Back(left). Turn Center right 45*, hands follow in Press (right), shift weight to 50/50. Withdraw Center 180*, weight into left foot 100*, andvance Center 0*, weight shifts to 50/50-whole body pushes. Turn,and Step to the S, repeat Ward-Off,Roll-Back, Press, Push.

Dragon Stepping. To defeat the tendancy to push off the back foot, practice placing an empty foot forward. Search out the ball of the foot with your mind’s eye, and bend the knee to bring it over the ball of the foot. Gently pull foward using traction in the foot, and the low back and abdomen for power.
